I want to start this little opinionated article by saying, “The first Relapse sucked major ass!” Whoo! I feel a lot better now that I got that off my chest. Yes people this is definitely a bold statement to make. On what grounds do I have to commit such judgmental treason? Well I personally thought that Encore was his worst album, but Relapse was analogous to Jigga’s Kingdom Come: there was no comeback for this kingdom. And this is pure irony coming from me because I thought Kingdom Come was a great comeback, but popular consensus says otherwise.
Anyway this isn’t about Jay-Z. Relapse was lacking in so many departments. For starters having one producer craft an entire LP can be a gift and a curse depending on the artist and producers chemistry. Dr. Dre is a legendary producer, but can we really be excited about Detox if the instrumentals from Relapse are what we have to look forward to? I wasn’t pleased or impressed at all. "3AM" was dope in concept, but boggled down by immature infancy with Eminem chanting “ya’ll,” “ye-ow,” or whatever annoying “y” sound he was making at the song’s beginning. Overall the album felt like a huge warm-up exercise rather than a chemically substantial outting between two legends. Immaturity ridiculously plagued Em’s return project.
Which is why I can’t wait for his subsequent sequel. While I was obviously disappointed, I didn’t feel all was lost. After hearing Em rip the title track “Chemical Warfare” to Alchemist’s Chemical Warfare album, I maintained my faith that Em still had it in him. His subject matter on the song was prehistoric (still dissing celebrities was soooooo 2000), but still comedic none the less. (Dick sword with the Jonas Brothers? I laughed my ass off!) Case in point: Em as a cameo appearance has been hot to death in 09. A compilation of all his guest verses can easily overshadow his 5th album, so we’ll ignore it. That’s what kept me in high spirit’s the whole time.
Speaking of Alchemist in a recent XXL interview he says that Em is diversifying his sound a bit for the sequel much like the Clipse did for Til the Casket Drops. He experiments with his chemistry with DJ Khalil and several other producers to update his signature moniker. What Alchemist says of Khalil and Slim Shady’s chemistry: “Khalil-who I think is the best producer right now to me-he had been sending records to Em for a while that wasn’t like, they weren’t like clicking in. […] And I think they found a couple joints now … the joints they have are crazy. I can’t say 100 percent [that he made the album], but I have heard at least two joints Khalil did and they’re fuckin’ stupid.” After that little statement, my belief system shot through the roof.
In conclusion it’s going to be interesting to see how Eminem adapts to production outside of his mentor and his own hands. Of course this is what we are accustomed to and probably don’t see any need for expansion. But hey. At the end of the day this is still artistry at it’s finest and artistry can’t reach high levels without room for improvement. It’s about evolution and Shady is no exception. Andre 3000 understands this better than anyone as it appears he’ll sell his soul for individuality and creative control. Sometimes it is best not to fix anything if it isn’t broken, but superb modifications, additions, and upgrades can lower hindered performance.
Here's to Relapse 2, the classic I know this sequel will turn out to be. I have a good feeling about this one!
